BS 5266-1 emergency lighting — designed, installed, commissioned and maintained in-house, with monthly function tests, annual full-duration tests and certification after every visit.
What it covers
Light on the escape route when the power goes
Emergency lighting keeps escape routes, stairwells, plant rooms and open areas illuminated when the normal supply fails. It has to be correctly designed, regularly tested and properly documented.
We survey the building, put right any gaps in coverage, and take on the testing programme — monthly function tests and the annual three-hour duration test — with remedial works handled by the same team rather than passed to another contractor.
The schedule
Emergency lighting testing frequencies
Intervals set out in BS 5266-1. We schedule them around your building's operation and log every result.
Daily
Central battery systems
A visual check of panel indicators where a central battery system is installed — no testing required.
Monthly
Function ('flick') test
Every luminaire and exit sign is switched to its emergency supply briefly to confirm it illuminates, then checked for correct recharge. Results are recorded in the logbook.
Annually
Full 3-hour duration test
The system runs on battery for its full rated duration — normally three hours — proving it would last a real evacuation. Any fitting that fails is repaired or replaced and the test repeated.
On completion
New installations
Design, install and commissioning certificates issued to BS 5266-1, with photometric coverage confirmed on escape routes and open areas.

Why emergency lighting testing is important
A legal requirement
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires escape routes to be adequately illuminated. BS 5266-1 sets out how that's designed, tested and recorded.
Batteries fail quietly
An emergency fitting can look perfectly healthy and still give you seconds instead of hours. Only a duration test proves it.
Evidence on demand
Fire officers, insurers and FM clients ask for the logbook. We keep monthly and annual records complete and current.
Safe evacuation
In a mains failure or a fire, lighting on stairs, corridors and exits is the difference between an orderly evacuation and a dangerous one.
